Jolly Grant sits right at the foot of the Himalayas, so the weather plays a bigger part in your trip here than at most airports. Fog in winter, heavy rain in the monsoon, and crowds in summer all show up in delays, fares and the drive after you land.
If you just want the short answer: October to November and March to April are the easiest months. Clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and fewer surprises.
Month by month
| When | Weather around Jolly Grant | Flying | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| October and November | Sunny days, cool nights | Usually smooth | Sightseeing, mountain views, Rishikesh |
| December to February | Cold mornings, mild afternoons | Morning fog can delay early flights | Quiet hill trips, maybe snow in Mussoorie |
| March and April | Pleasant and green | Usually smooth | Pretty much everything, rafting starts |
| May and June | Hot in the valley, busy in the hills | Fine, but flights and roads are packed | Summer holidays, Char Dham Yatra |
| July to September | Monsoon, sometimes very heavy rain | Rain and low cloud can cause delays | Lush green scenery, fewer tourists |
Winter fog
Like much of north India, the Doon Valley gets thick fog on some winter mornings, mostly in December and January. Early flights are the ones that get hit.
What helps:
- choose a late morning or afternoon flight in December and January
- keep your plans for that day loose
- check your flight status before you leave for the airport
The monsoon
Dehradun gets a lot of rain between July and September. Flights usually still run, though storms and low cloud can delay them. The bigger problem is the road after you land:
- hill roads to Mussoorie and the Char Dham can have landslides and closures
- rafting in Rishikesh usually stops for the season
- give yourself extra time to get back to the airport
The busy season
- May and June: summer holidays send families to Mussoorie and Rishikesh. Fares jump and hill roads get crowded.
- Char Dham Yatra: usually starting around April or May, it brings lots of pilgrims through Dehradun and Rishikesh.
- Long weekends and festivals: Diwali, Christmas and New Year, and Holi all bring crowds from Delhi. Book early.
Booking tips
- Book well ahead for May, June and festival weekends. Delhi to Dehradun fills up and prices climb fast.
- Compare with the train. For Delhi, the Shatabdi can make sense once you count the airport transfer.
- Pick your flight time with the season in mind: afternoons in winter, daytime arrivals if you’re heading into the hills.
- Check which routes are running. Some only fly in certain seasons. Our Jolly Grant Airport guide has the current list.
