  10. Frequently asked questions

People who need a room near Jolly Grant usually fall into two groups. Some have a very early or very late flight. Others are here because a family member is at Himalayan Hospital, and they might need to stay a few days or a few weeks. What works for one group doesn’t always work for the other, so this guide is about picking the right area first.

We don’t take money from hotels and we don’t rank individual properties. Use this to choose an area, then compare current prices and recent reviews on whichever booking site you like.

Jolly Grant and Swami Ram Nagar

This is the area right around the hospital, with the airport next door. You’ll find guest houses, lodges, rooms meant for patients’ families and a few small hotels. Many of them are used to hosting people on long hospital stays.

Why it works: you’re minutes from the hospital for early registration and visiting hours. Chemists, small eateries and grocery shops nearby are set up for hospital visitors.

What to watch: quality varies a lot. Look at recent photos and reviews, and ask about hot water in winter, power backup and road noise. For longer stays, ask for a weekly rate.

Ask the hospital, too. Big hospitals often have attendant accommodation or keep a list of nearby places. It’s worth asking at the help desk when you arrive.

Bhaniyawala

Bhaniyawala is the busy market area close to the airport road. It has a handful of hotels and guest houses, places to eat and everyday shops. It’s a good balance of convenience and choice for a single night before a morning flight.

Doiwala

Doiwala is the nearest proper town, on the Dehradun to Haridwar highway. Prices are lower, the market is bigger, and there’s a railway station, which helps if you’re travelling by train.

Rishikesh

If you’ve got time to spare, Rishikesh gives you far more options, from ashrams and hostels to riverside resorts, and plenty to do. It’s 30 to 45 minutes from the airport. For a long hospital stay, some families like it as a calmer base for a few days. The drive is covered in our Jolly Grant to Rishikesh guide.

One warning: weekend traffic near Tapovan and Laxman Jhula can add real time. For a 6 am flight, staying in Jolly Grant itself is much less stressful.

Dehradun city

Dehradun has the biggest range of business hotels, chains and serviced apartments, along with malls and restaurants. It suits work trips and people heading up to Mussoorie. It’s 45 to 60 minutes from the airport, more at rush hour, as explained in Jolly Grant to Dehradun city.

So, where should you stay?

  • Flight before 8 am? Jolly Grant or Bhaniyawala.
  • A day or two at Himalayan Hospital? Jolly Grant or Swami Ram Nagar.
  • Long hospital stay with family? Start near the hospital. Doiwala or Rishikesh can work for better weekly rates or a quieter base.
  • Holiday first, flight after? Rishikesh or Mussoorie, with plenty of buffer for the drive.
  • Work in Dehradun? Stay in the city and book a cab to the airport.

Check these before you book

  1. The exact pin on the map. “Near airport” sometimes means several kilometres away.
  2. Reviews from the last few months, especially about cleanliness, hot water and noise.
  3. Heating and power backup if you’re coming between December and February.
  4. Check-in and check-out times, if you land late or leave very early.
  5. The cancellation policy. Hospital plans change quickly, so flexible bookings are worth a little extra.
  6. Pickup service. Some places will collect you from the airport or the hospital.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best area to stay near Jolly Grant Airport?

For an early flight, Jolly Grant itself or the nearby Bhaniyawala market area are the most convenient. Rishikesh and Dehradun have more choice but are 30 to 60 minutes away.

Where should I stay when visiting Himalayan Hospital?

The Jolly Grant and Swami Ram Nagar area around the hospital is the most practical, with guest houses and lodges used to hosting patients’ families. Ask the hospital help desk about attendant accommodation as well.

Are there budget hotels near Jolly Grant?

Yes. Jolly Grant, Bhaniyawala and Doiwala all have budget hotels and guest houses. Check recent reviews and the exact location on a map before you book.

Is it better to stay in Rishikesh or Dehradun before an early flight?

Neither is ideal for a very early flight. If you fly before 8 am, staying in Jolly Grant saves you a 30 to 60 minute drive in the dark.
